Given info : two blocks whose sum of masses is 1 kg were arranged as shown in fig. acceleration of blocks is twice when A is hanging that of when B is hanging.

To find : the mass of A is ..

solution : let the mass of A is m₁ and the mass of B is m₂.

case 1 : when block A is hanging,

 m₁g - T = m₁a ...(1)

 T = m₂a ...(2)

from equations (1) and (2) we get, a = m₁g/(m₁ + m₂) ...(3)

case 2 : when block B is hanging,

m₂g - T = m₂a' ...(4)

T  = m₁a' ...(5)

from equations (4) and (5) we get, a' = m₂g/(m₁ + m₂) ..(6)

a/c to question,

        a = 2a'

⇒ m₁ = 2m₂

but the sum of masses = m₁ + m₂ = 1 kg

⇒ m₁ + m₁/2 = 1kg

⇒ m₁ = 2/3 kg

therefore the mass of block A is 2/3 kg.
