TWO boats A and B are at a
distance of 48 km and ratio of
speed of boat A to boat B in still
water is 5:3. They both start to
travel towards each other and
meet after 2 hours. Find the
downstream speed of boat A if
boat A can cover 24 km upstream
in 2 hours.
Select one:
a. 9 km/h
b. 15 km/hr

Answer:

c) 18km/h

Step explanation.

Total distance between boat A and B are 48km.

so,

Let A speed in still water =5x km/h

: " B " " " " =3x km /h

total distance taken by A in 2hrs =5x*2=10x

" " " B " =3x*2=6x

ATQ

10x+6x=48

16x=48

x=48/16= 3

A speed =5x=5*3=15km/h

B speed =3x=3*3=9km/h

: let the speed of stream =y

: " " downstream =15+y

: " " upstream =15-y

ATQ

: 24/15-y=2

:24=30- 2y

: 2y=30-24

:y=6/2=3

downstream speed =15+y=15+3=18km/h.

Glad I could help you.

Thanks.
