Given:

  • 12 kg & 8 kg is connected by a wire over a frictionless pulley.

  • g = 10 m/s²

To find:

Acceleration of the masses ?

Calculation:

Let the tension in the system be T :

So, for 12 kg mass:

12g - T = 12a

Again, for 8 kg mass:

T - 8g = 8a

Adding the equations , we get:

12g - 8g = 12a + 8a

 \implies 4g =20a

 \implies 20a = 40

 \implies a = 2 \: m {s}^{ - 2}

So, acceleration of both the masses is 2 m/.
