Solution

Given

  • Two bodies of masses 2kg and 3Kg have kinetic energies 16J and 24J respecitvely when they are moving in the same direction.

To Find

  • The total momentum after collision is ?

Step-by-Step-Explaination

As we know that

Formula of kinetic energy = \frac{1}{2} {mv}^{2}

So,

For first body,

m = 2kg

kinetic energy = 16J

Using Kinetic Energy = \frac{1}{2} {mv}^{2}

Putting respective value, we get

16 = \frac{1}{2} × {2v}^{2}

\frac{2}{2} get\: cancelled.

{v}^{2} = 16

v = \sqrt{16} = 4

Now,

For second body,

Mass = 3kg

kinetic Energy = 24

Using Kinetic Energy = \frac{1}{2} {mv}^{2}

Putting respective value, we get

\frac{1}{2} {3v}^{2} = 24

{v}^{2} = \frac{24 \times 2}{3}

v = 4 m/s

Now,

Momentum before collision = momentum after collision,

So,

Momentum before collision is {m}^{1}  {v}^{1}  + {m}^{2}  {v}^{2}

= (2)(4) + (3)(4)

= 8 + 12

= 20 kgm/s
