Let, the total number of votes be, 'x'

∴58% of x = 58x/100

∴The other candidate secured = x-(58x/100)

                                                   = (100x-58x)/100

                                                   = 42x/100

∴The winning candidate lead by=(58x/100)-(42x/100)

                                                     =(58x-42x)/100

                                                     = 16x/100

By condition,

16x/100=2560

⇒16x=2560*100

⇒x=256000/16

⇒x=16000

(Ans): 16000 votes were polled.
