Answer:

Winning candidate polled 55% votes

Loosing candidate polled 45% votes

Majority 90

Invalid votes 70

Let the total number of votes polled is x

Winning candidate polled 55 x/100

Loosing candidate polled 45 x/100

Majority is 55 x/100 - 45 x/100 = 90

55 x - 45 x/100= 90

i.e 10 x = 90 into 100 = 9000

x = 900 The number of votes polled is 900

Total number of votes is (votes polled+ invalid votes)900 + 70 = 970.

This solves your problem.

Remember Majority is always on the number of votes polled and the invalid votes are given only to confuse.

Number of votes polled by winning candidate 55 x 900/100 = 495

Number of votes polled by loosing candidate 45 x 900/100 = 405
