Given:

Two capacitors of capacitance 6 µF and 4 µF are put in series across a 120 V battery.

To find:

Potential difference across the 4 µF capacitor?

Calculation:

Net capacitance is :

C =  \dfrac{4 \times 6}{4 + 6}  = 2.4 \:  \mu F

Now, net charge in circuit :

q = C \times V

 \implies q = 2.4\times 120

 \implies q = 288 \:  \mu C

Now, potential difference across 4 uF capacitor:

V =  \dfrac{q}{C_{4 \mu F}}

 \implies V =  \dfrac{288}{4}

 \implies V =  72 \: Volt

So, potential difference across the 4 uF capacitor is 72 Volts.
