Two cars initially at rest are free to move the in the x direction car a has mass 4 kg and car b has mass 2kg they are tied together compressing a spring in between them when the spring holding them together is burned car a moves off with a speed of 2 metre per second how much energy was stored in the spring before it was burned

Thus the energy stored in the spring before it it was burned is 24 J.

Explanation:

According to the law of conservation of momentum:

mAvA+mB+vB=0 [Initially both of them were at rest]

Now find V(B)

vB = −mAvA / mB

= − (4)(2)/(2)

= − 4 m/s

(b) E = 1/2mAv^2(B) + 1/ 2mBv^2(B)

E = 1/2(4)(2)^2 + 1/2(2)(−4)^2

= 24 J

Thus the energy stored in the spring before it it was burned is 24 J.
