Two cars start together in the same direction at the same place. The first goes with a uniform speed of 20km/hr and the second goes with a speed of 16km/hr in the first hour and increases the speed by 1km each succeeding hour. After how many hours will the second car overtake the first car if both goes non-stop.

Given:- common ratio = 1km/hrs.

It is arithmetic series were the first term = 16

Let the car over takes the first car at n hours

20n= 16+17+18+19...…. n terms

20n = \frac{n}{2} [(16 x 2)+(n-1)x 1]

40n= n[32 +n-1]

40 = 32-1+n

40-32 =n

n = 9

Hence the second car overtakes the first car in 9 sec.
