Pumping of groundwater: pumping of water out of the ground faster than it is replenished over long periods of time causes groundwater depletion in a huge scale.

Pumping water from aquifers: Aquifers are water sources that flow freely through saturated rocks. They can be found in various sizes, they are underground water reserves that absorb water and hold it. We continuously pump water from these sources without letting them replenish first.

Agriculture needs a lot of groundwater: majority of the groundwater is pumped for the sake of agriculture. And agriculture requires a lot of water.
