Two cells are observed under the microscope.
Cell A is shaped like a cube with each side, s, approximately 10μm.
Cell B is shaped more like a flat rectangular prism. Its dimensions are 160μm length, by 40μm width, but 1.25μm height.
Which of these cells will show a faster rate of diffusion? Explain in terms of surface area and volume. Show your calculations.
(Remember surface area of a cube = 6s2, volume of a cube = s3, surface area of a rectangular prism = 2lh + 2lw + 2wh and the volume of a rectangular prism = l x w x h)
