First things first!
First of all, we should know at first why the cells expanded.
The cells expanded because they are put in a dilute solution ( Distilled water is dilute). Such kind of dilute solution is called a hypotonic solution.
So, the possible reasons due to which the cells expanded at different rates maybe —
— Due to variations in permeability potential of the membrane of the cells.
— It may be due to a rupture in one of the cells.
— They might have been put in different amounts of distilled water.
( The cell which was put in more water will expand faster than that of put in less water)
