The equivalent emf of the two cells is 1.7 V and the equivalent resistance is 0.12 Ω

Explanation:

Complete statement:

Two cells of emf 1.5 v and 2.0 v having internal resistance 0.2 ohm and 0.3 ohm and  respectively are connected in parallel. Calculate the emf and  internal resistance of the equivalent.?

Solution:

Electro Motive Force:

E1 = 1.5 V E2 = 3 V

Internal resistance r = 0.2 Ω and 0.3 Ω

Effective emf of two cells connected in parallel is.

E (eff) = E1r2  + E2r1 / r1 + r2

This implies that:

E (eff) = 1.5 x 0.3 + 2 x 0.2 / 0.5 = 1.7 V

R (eff) = r1r2 / r1 + r2

R (eff) = 0.2 x 0.3 / 0.5 = 0.12 Ω

Thus the equivalent emf of the two cells is 1.7 V and the equivalent resistance is 0.12 Ω
