Explanation:

Given conditions -

  • q₁ = 10 μC = 10 × 10⁻⁶ C.
  • q₂ = 5 μC = 5 × 10⁻⁶ C.
  • Distance between them(r₁) = 1 m.
  • Final Distance between them(r₂) = 0.5 m

To Find -

  • work done to make distance 0.5 m

Solution -

Work done in bringing the charges upto the distance of 0.5 m is given by,

  • W = k q₁ q₂ (1/r₂ - 1/r₁)

→ W = k q₁ q₂ (r₁-r₂/r₁r₂)

= 9 × 10⁹ × 10 × 10⁻⁶ × 5 × 10⁻⁶(1-0.5/1×0.5)

= 450 × 10⁻³ (0.5 × 2)

= 450 × 10⁻³(1)

= 450 × 10⁻³

= 0.45 J.

Hence,

work done for bringing the charges upto the distance of 0.5 m is 0.45 J.
