Two charges + Q and -Q are kept at points (-x2,0) and (x1, 0) respectively, in the XY-plane.

electric field due to positive charge Q at origin is E_1=\frac{kQ}{x_2^2} along positive x - axis.

electric field due to negative charge -Q at origin is E_2=\frac{kQ}{x_1^2} along positive x - axis.

so, resultant electric field at origin, E=E_1+E_2

= kQ\left[\frac{1}{x_1^2}+\frac{1}{x_2^2}\right] along positive direction of x-axis .

jerolyn: electic field is always from + to -. so, will the electric field of -Q will be along the -ve x-axis. is it not?
