Though diagram is not present, but answers are given below

  • Observation of listener in first situation, when string hangs loose will be - He won't be able to hear the speaker.

  • Observation of listener in second situation, when string is pulled tight will be - He will be able to hear the speaker.

  • The conclusion is that, sound requires medium to travel. When the speaker speaks, the vibrations are transferred through string to the listener.

  • In case of loose string, the direction of vibrations will not be certain and will loose intensity. Thus, they will not be heard.

  • In case of pulled string, the vibrations will move through the string to a specified path, which is near the ear of listener. Hence, the voice will be heard.
