draw a perpendicular two both the chords from the center of the circle.

These perpendiculars will bisect the chords as perpendicular drawn from the center of a circle bisects the chord.

now draw the radius from the center to the point on the circumference where the chord meets the circumference.

You will have two right angled triangles. Prove the pythagores theorem in both.

The cord of 6cm gets divided into 3cm and 8cm into 4cm. The heigths of both these triangles will be 4cm and 3cm respectively by pythagores theorem.

Add both the heights and you get 7cm : )
