Step-by-step explanation:

given, two circles of radii 5cm and 3cm and base 4cm .

to find : length of common chord ( let the cord be AD)

Ans: S = a+b+c / 2 = 5+3+4/2 = 12/2 = 6cm

therefore, by herons formula :-

= √ s(s-a) (s-b) (s-c)

= √ 6 (1) (3) (2)

= √ 3x3x2x2

= 3x2 = 6 cm²

so, area of triangle ABC ( we consume )

6 = ½ x base X height

6 = ½ x 4 x h

6/2 = h

height = 3cm ( inner common chord height) (AE)

therefore, AD = 2 AE ( inner common chord )

AD= 2x3 = 6cm
