Two circles touch each other externally. The distance between the center's of the circles is 14 cm and the sum of their areas is 308 cm2. Find the difference between radii of the circles. (in cm)?

pi * R1^2 + pi R2^2 = 308

R1^2 + R2^2 = 308 / pi = 98   (I)

R1 + R2 = 14

R1^1 + 2 R1 R2 + R2^2 = 196    squaring the previous equation

2 R1 R2 = 196 - 98 = 98  subtracting equation (I)

R1 R2 = 49     and R1 = 49 / R2

49 / R2 + R2 = 14

R2 + R2^2 = 14 R2   or R2^2 - 14 R2 + 49 = 0

(R2 - 7) * (R2 - 7) = 0     factoring the above equation

R2 = 7     and R1 = 7     since R1 + R2 = 14

Total area = pi * (7^2 + 7^2) = 308
