Two cities are 80km apart. Traveling on the same direction two cars meet each other after 4 hrs but traveling on opposite direction they meet after 2 hrs, find the speed of cars.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the two cars be A and B and their speeds be x km/hr and y km/hr.

(i) When they are going in the same direction:

Time taken for the cars to meet = 4 hours.

Relative speed = x - y km/hr.

∴ Time = 80/(x - y) = 4 hours

⇒ x - y = 20

(ii) When they are going in the opposite direction:

Time taken for the cars to meet = 2 hours.

Relative speed = x + y km/hr

∴ Time = 80/(x + y) = 2

⇒ x + y = 40

On solving (i) & (ii), we get

⇒ x - y = 20

⇒ x + y = 40

   -----------------

   2x = 60

    x = 30

Substitute x = 30 in (i), we get

⇒ x - y = 20

⇒ 30 - y = 20

⇒ y = 10.

Therefore:

Speeds of the cars are 30 km/hr and 10 km/hr.
