Since the two wires have same material, length and diameter, they have the same resistance. Let the resistance of each wire be R.

Let applied potential difference be V.

{R_{series} = {R}_{1} + {R}&{2} = R + R = 2R

{P}_{series} = V²/{R_{series} = V²/2R .....................eq. (i)

1/ {R_{parallel} =1/ {R}_{1} + 1/ {R}_{2}

{R}_{parallel} = R/2

{P}_{parallel} = V²/{R_{parallel} = 2V²/R ....................eq. (ii)

Dividing (ii) by (i)

\frac{P_parallel}{P_series} = 1/4
