Let Maximum intensity be I .

Let Minimum intensity be i .

Let the original intensities be I₁ and I₂ .

I : i = ( √I₁ + √I₂ )² : ( √I₁ - √I₂ )²

= > 5 : 1 = √I₁ + √I₂ : √I₁ - √I₂

By componendo and dividendo :

= > ( 5 + 1 )/( 5 - 1 ) = 2 √I₁ : 2 √I₂

= > 6 / 4 = √I₁ : √I₂

= > √I₁ : √I₂ = 3 / 2

Square both sides :

= > I₁ : I₂ = 36/16

= > I₁ : I₂ = 9 : 4
