Two coils P and Q are kept as shown in the figure. Coil P is connected to a resistor R, battery and a key S, Coil Q is connected to a galvanometer G.
State your observation in the galvanometer G:

(i) If the number of turns in coil P is increased and the key S is closed.
(ii) When the current flow becomes steady in the coil P.

Given:

Two coils P and Q are kept as shown in the figure. Coil P is connected to a resistor R, battery and a key S, Coil Q is connected to a galvanometer G.

To find:

Observations when :

  • If the number of turns in coil P is increased and the key S is closed

  • When the current flow becomes steady in the coil P.

Solution:

In usual case , the growth of current in coil P will result in change of magnetic field which will result in mutual induction of the coil Q. This will be reflected by a deflection in the galvanometer marker.

1st Case:

Now , when number of turns in coil P is increased and the key is closed the resultant change in flux in coil P will be much higher as compared to the usual case.

So , EMF induced in coil Q will be higher and we will observe a greater deflection in the galvanometer

2nd Case:

When the current flow becomes steady in coil p the net change in flux in coil P becomes zero hence mutual induction in coil Q also becomes zero.

Hence , there is no deflection in the Galvanometer in this case.
