Compound y CH₃CH=CHCH₂CH₂CH₃

Compound x CH₃CH₂CH(CH₃)CH₂CH₃

You should note that compound y is an alkene and hence unsaturated and the compound y (alkenes) normally undergoes addition reactions.

This addition reaction is typical of alkenes because of the double bond.

Compound x is an alkane hence saturated. But alkanes do not undergo most of the reactions and hence they only react under special conditions.

Alkenes thus undergo substitution reactions.
