Two conducting wires of same material, equal length and equal diameter are first connected in series and then in parallel. Compare the equivalent resistance in two cases.

Let applied potential difference be V.

R series =R 1+R2

​ =R+R=2R

P series=V²/R

=V²/(2R)..........(i)

1/R parallel= 1/R1+/1R2

​R parallel=R/2

P parallel=V²/R parallel =2V²/R............(ii)

Dividing (ii) from (i),

P parallel/P series=1/4
