Two conducting wires of the same material and of equal lengths and equal diameters are first connected in series and then parallel in a circuit across the same potential difference. The ratio of heat produced in series and parallel combinations would be -
(a) 1:2
(b) 2:1
(c) 1:4
(d) 4:1

R is the resistance value in a wire.

According to the series, the value of Rs is R + R which is 2R.

In parallel, the value of 1/Rp becomes 1/R + 1/R = 2/R.

The value of Rp is R/2.

q = V2/R x t

The value of qs = V2/Rs x t

The value of qp = V2/Rp x t

Hence, qs/qp= (V2/Rs x t)/(V2/Rp x t)

= (R/2)/2R = 1:4
