Two consequences of poverty in the community and in the individual

Explanation:

Poverty is a physical state and a state of mind . An individual is called “ poor” when he can not afford the minimum to support himself or his family . The effects of poverty on an individual can be multiple and various. Problems like poor nutrition, poor health, lack of housing, delinquency, a poor quality education, and the choice of having a positive or negative response to your situation can be one of the outcomes of poverty.

First an essential need of an individual is food. Eating is what makes you strong. When you are poor, food is your first worry. How do you get strength when you have nothing to eat? You see poor people struggle with food availability. Even when they have some food, that fact does not mean it s a good or healthy food. Malnutrition is so common for poor people .If we take countries like Rwanda in Africa, you can see a lot of children starving, sometimes to death.

Second, poor people in my country used to say' “When you are sick, you just wait for death.” This statement is not absolutely wrong. When you are poor, you usually have problems with heath care and your health. The poor cannot afford to go to see a doctor or buy the medicines they need. You can see websites like fundme.com where people are raising funds to help the poor to get heath care. There are thousands of N.G.O‘s (non-governmental organizations) that are dedicated to improving the health of the poor .I remember my grandpa, who was a healthy man. He was admitted to the hospital because he has prostate cancer .His case was bad because he waited so long without going to see a doctor to check himself. He would rather go to the “serigne” and get local medicine, which is cheaper. As a result of his lack of funds, my grand pa died from prostate cancer .

Third, being homeless is also a common effect of poverty. In some countries, a house is something very hard to get even for the middle class, so imagine the poor people; it is almost impossible to find a house. The poor live usually in a shelter, or they sleep outside on the street. Even in a country like the United States, you can see a lot homeless people. In West Virginia, close to four hundred thirty (430) people were registered as homeless. They might get food and some help, but homelessness is now a culture in the United States.

Fourth, a poor person can end up begging or in some form of delinquency, such as robbery or prostitution. Some people even go so far as to become criminals and drug dealers and put their lives in danger. In Senegal we have a flail call “ talibé” ( kids beggar) .You can see them in the street, begging for money or food. Their parents send them to a supposedly Koranic teacher to teach them religion, but the parents want to avoid the responsibility of their kids because they are poor. The “mara” sends the kids to the street to beg for him. A lot of these kids end up in delinquency or being abused by the “mara” or other people . One day on the radio I heard the history about a former “talibé” talking about why he is a homosexual .When he was a kid, he has been abused sexually by his “mara” and some people in exchange of money or food, so then for him it was the normal life. When a “talibe” does not achieve the setting goal of the “mara,” he was beaten, so they will steal or rob in order to please the “mara.” When theses children are getting old, they continue this lifestyle because of poverty. Similarly, prostitution is also an outcome of poverty; I remember I had a classmate who was a girl. Her dad passed away and left a lot of debt. All of their property was seized, and they could not pay any bills. Their mum was unethical and made her little girl did home prostitution that mean people are coming in their house and pay for the time. It was embarrassing, but his mother did not care because for her that was the only way to get out poverty.

The fifth, Education is already a privilege for some middle class, for the poor people a good education is sometimes a dream. School cost money .Even sometimes when a poor have access to school it s hard for them to keep follow through on normal expectation because it s hard to concentrate for school if you have no place to live or nothing to eat or cannot afford your books.

Sixth, people respond to their poverty differently. A positive behavior can be a big hope for the future like everything going to be all right. We have seen a lot of people starting from nothing and being homeless to being rich and wealthy because they believe they can make it .On the other hand , we see some poor people who so hopeless and think nothing is going to change because they let other people judge them , and they judge themselves.

Poverty is one of the biggest problems in the world. Poverty affects people in multiple ways. The causes are many, but there is always a way out and hope even if one cannot see it.
