Two containers contain a mixture of spirit and water; quantity of spirit being 0.50 and 0.75 of the quantity of mixture . if 5 liters of the first and 8 liters of the second are mixed together , find the ratio of spirit to water in the new mixture

Let the two containers be A (first container) and B (second container) then :

5 litres of A

Amount of spirit = 0.50 × 5 = 2.5 litres

Amount of water = 5 - 2.5 = 2.5 litres

8 litres of B

Amount of spirit = 0.75 × 8 = 6 litres

Amount of water = 8 - 6 = 2 litres

Mixture of A and B

Amount of spirit = 6 + 2.5 = 8.5 litres

Amount of water = 2 + 2.5 = 4.5 litres

Ratio of spirit to water

85/45 = 17/9
