Two containers made of insulating material contain the same volume of water at room
temperature. The containers do not have lids. The volume of liquid in each container gradually decreases.
One of the containers is wide and shallow. The other container is narrow and deep.
Predict which container has the greater rate of cooling. Explain your answer.

Answer:

Container which is wide and shallow will have greater rate of cooling.

Explanation:

Well the question here is very thoughtful and interesting. It really wants to make your brain do a lot more work than needed (joking) . But here's the explanation to my answer.

Basically what the question means by asking which container has greater rate of cooling is that which container will have greater rate of evaporation. Why? Here me out:

When you sprinkle some water on your face on a very sunny day and when the water evaporates it somehow leaves a cooling effect on your face.

Basically what I mean is that evaporation causes cooling effect. Because for the water to evaporate it needs to absorb some heat from it's surroundings. Hence when it absorbs heat from it's surrounding the temperature drops, leaving a cooling effect.

Hence the container which is wide and shallow will cause greater rate of cooling as it will have greater rate of evaporation. (why? greater the surface area, greater the evaporation)

Hope it helps :)
