Two cyclists, 81 miles apart, start riding toward each other at the same time. One cycles 2 times as fast as the other. If they meet 3 hours later, what is the speed (in mi/h) of the faster cyclist?

. Write an equation using the information as it is given above that can be solved to answer this problem. Use the variable r to represent the speed of the slower cyclist.

Given : Two cyclists, 81 miles apart, start riding toward each other at the same time. One cycles 2 times as fast as the other.

They meet 3 hours later,

To Find :  what is the speed (in mi/h) of the faster cyclist

Solution:

speed of the slower cyclist.  = r  mi/hr

speed of the faster cyclist.  = 2r  mi/hr

riding toward each other

Hence effective speed =  r + 2r  = 3r mi/hr

Distance = Speed * Time

=> 81  = 3r * 3

=> r  = 9

and 2r = 18

speed of the slower cyclist.  = 9  mi/hr

speed of the faster cyclist.  = 18  mi/hr
