Solution:

Two dealers have marked an article for same price. The first dealer allows, two successive discounts of 15% and 5%. The other allows a discount of 20%.

Now:

Let the marked price (MP) be Rs. x.

So,

The selling price (SP) of the first dealer:

\implies SP = (1-d/100) (1-d/100) * MP

\implies SP = (1-15/100) (1-5/100)

\implies SP = 85/100 * 95/100 * x

\implies SP = 17/20 * 19/20 * x

\implies SP = 323/400x

Now,

Selling price (SP) of the second dealer:

\implies SP = (1-d/100) * MP

\implies SP = (1-20/100) * x

\implies SP = 80/100x

\implies SP = 4/5x

Now, we know that:

SP of 1st dealer > SP of 2nd dealer

Hence:

Second option is better.
