The metal X is most probably iron and metal Y is most probably sodium.

  • The iron metal can react with water when the water is in it's gaseous state which is known as the steam. In this chemical reaction, iron oxide and hydrogen gas are formed as the products of the chemical reaction.

Fe (s) + H2O (g) ---> Fe3O4 + H2

  • The sodium metal can react with water when water is in it's normal liquid state. In this chemical reaction, sodium hydroxide and hydrogen gas are formed as the products of the chemical reaction.

Na + H2O -----> NaOH + H2
