Given:

Two elements A and B are isotones. Their mass numbers are respectively 32 and 31. If the atomic number of A is 16.

To Find:

The atomic number of B.

Solution:

To find the atomic number B we will follow the following steps:

As we know,

Isotones are species that have the same number of neutrons.

Also,

Mass number = protons + neutrons

And,

Number of protons = atomic number

Number of neutrons in A = Mass number- protons\atomic number

Number of neutrons in A = 31 - 16 = 15

Number of neutrons in B = 15 ( because B is isotonic with A).

The atomic number of B = Mass number - neutrons

The atomic number of B = 31 - 15 = 16

Henceforth, the atomic number of B is 16.
