Answer:

1)Electronic configuration of element A - 2,8,2

Electronic configuration of element B - 2,8,7

2)Ionic bond is formed by the elements A and B

3)The formula of the compound formed by A and B is AB_2.

Explanation:

1) Given the atomic number of A is 12

The electronic configuration of A  is 2,8,2

The atomic number of B is 17

The electronic configuration of B is 2,8,7

2) Since the number of electrons in the outermost shell of element A is 2, It has a tendency to loose these two electrons, while element B, which has 7 electrons in its outermost shell tends to receive the electrons.

∴The type of bond formed by the elements A and B are ionic bond.

3) Since the valency of element A is 2, and hence it has a tendency to loose two electrons. The valency of element B is 1, the element B receives one electron. Hence in the compound formed by A and B, one atom of A reacts with two atoms of B.

∴ The formula of the compound formed by A and B is AB_2.
