Answer:

Since the oxide turns red litmus blue, therefore X is a metal because it is an alkaline oxide.

Most of the metals form respective metal oxides when react with oxygen.

Metal + Oxygen → metal oxide

Examples: (1) Reaction of potassium with oxygen:- Potassium metal forms potassium oxide when reacts with oxygen.

4K+O

2

→2K

2

O

(2) Reaction of sodium with oxygen:- Sodium metal forms sodium oxide when reacts with oxygen.

4Na+O

2

→2Na

O

The elements X and Y can be classified as X-metal and Y-non metal.

  • When a metal is reacted with oxygen it forms a metal oxide and if the metal oxide is dissolved in water then it forms metal hydroxide which is a strong base. So, X is a metal.
  • When a non metal is reacted with oxygen it also forms a oxide and if it is dissolved in water the non metal oxide shows acidic character. So, Y is a non metal.
