x- a)6
y- a)7
x- b) 2
y- b) 1
c) y has more non metallic character than x
d) y is smaller in size than x

element x belongs to group 16
electronic configuration of x=2,8,6
therefore there will be 6 electrons in the outermost shell

element y belongs to group 17
electronic configuration of y=2,8,7
therefore there will be 7 electrons in the outermost shell

element x needs 2 electrons to complete its octet
hence its valency is -2

element y needs 1 electron to complete its octet.
hence its valency is -1.

elements in group 16 are nonmetals whereas elements in group 17 are gases.
therefore elements in group 17 have more nonmetallic character than elements in group 16

atomic size increases down the group in both groups .

hope it helps you
