Answer:-

Atomic number of X = 12.

Element = Magnesium.

Atomic number of Y = 16.

Element = Sulphur.

So, considering Magnesium first.

Electronic configuration = (2, 8, 2)

  • We have three shells in the configuration, hence magnesium is is present in the third period in the modern periodic table.

  • As the total value of electrons that can be present in the valence shell of magnesium is 8. And the electrons present in its valence shell is 2. ( Valency = 2) Hence, magnesium can give away its electrons to form Mg(2+) ion. Hence, we can say it will form an ionic bond.

Considering Sulphur,

Electronic configuration = (2, 8, 6)

  • There are 3 shells, so it will fall in third period of the modern periodic table.

  • The total electrons in the valence shell of sulphur can be 8. And the electrons present in the valence shell are 6. ( Valency = 2 ) Hence, sulphur can take two electrons from some other element to form S(2-) ion. Hence, it will form ionic bond.

Chemical bond formed between Mg and S.

( The bond will obviously be ionic )

Mg : × S ×

Mg(2+)S(2+)

MgS

Atomic number is the sum of total number of protons present in an element. And, each element of the periodic table will have a different atomic number.

Hence, element with atomic number 12 is magnesium and element with atomic number 16 is sulfur.

Magnesium being a metal will lose its valence electrons in order to gain stability. On the other hand, sulfur being a non-metal will need to gain two electrons in order to attain stability.

Therefore, when magnesium will donate its valence electrons to sulfur atom then it will result in the formation of an ionic bond.

As an ionic bond is the bond formed due to transfer of electrons from one atom to another.

The ionic compound formed will be Mg_{2}S. The reaction equation will be as follows.

2mg+S -----> mg2S
