Answer- The above question is from the chapter 'Periodic Classification of Elements'.

Given question: Two elements X and Y have atomic number 12 and 8 respectively. Which type of Bond will they form ?

Write the formula of the compound formed by their combination ( in terms of x and y).

Answer: Element X has atomic number 12.

⇒ Its electronic configuration = 2,8,2

Its valency is 2. It can lose 2 electrons easily to become stable.

Thus, X is a metal.

Element Y has atomic number 8.

⇒ Its electronic configuration = 2,6

Its valency is 2. It can gain 2 electrons easily to become stable.

Thus, Y is a non-metal.

Metals and non-metals combine together to form an ionic bond.

Formula of their combination(by criss cross method) = X²⁺ Y²⁻ = XY

∴ X and Y will form an ionic bond.

The formula of their combination is XY.
