The atomic number of X is 12 so it is the element Magnesium . The atomic number of Y is 16 so it is the element Sulphur.

Magnesium is an alkaline earth metal and belongs to period no. 3.

Sulphur is in group 16 and also belongs to period no. 3

Reaction:

Mg + S ----> MgS

(It is an ionic compound)
