Answer: Sodium is cation and Chlorine is anion.

Explanation: The first shell of an atom can hold 2 electrons and second shell can hold 8 electrons. In case of Sodium it's electronic configuration is 2,8,1 (as its atomic number is 11 ). Here one electron is extra in last shell ie, the valence elecrons is 1. So it is a cation and is +1 (in case of valency + and - is not an issue but in ions + and - is important ). Chlorine has electronic configuration as 2,8,7. Here one electron is less in the last shell so it is having -1 charge and is an anion. It's valency is also 1 but charge is different from Sodium .
