Two equal masses travel towards each other on a frictionless air track at speeds of 60 m/s and 40 m/s. They stick together on impact.
What are the speeds of the masses after impact?

Answer:

This is very simple to do using the principle of conservation of momentum. Let each mass be m . Arbitrarily adopting the standard that the first mass is travelling with a positive velocity, and the combined masses will be travelling with velocity v we get :-

2mv=60m−40m=20m

dividing both sides by 2m we get
