Geotropism

  • The movement or development of plant components in reaction to gravity is referred to as geotropism.
  • Geotropism results from an uneven distribution of auxin hormones, just like phototropism.
  • Roots growing towards gravity are an example of geotropism (downwards).
  • Positive geotropism occurs when plant parts move or grow downwards in response to gravity's draw, whereas negative geotropism occurs when plant parts move or grow upwards in response to gravity's pull.
  • Roots (grow downwards), Negative Geotropism (grow upwards) are two examples of positive geotropism (grow upwards).

Phototropism

  • Phototropism is the reaction of a plant or other photosynthesizing organism to light.
  • Because plants require sunshine to create food, phototropism is a phenomena in which a plant may optimize its exposure to sunlight.
  • There are two kinds of phototropism:
  • Positive phototropism is a plant's reaction to light. Sunflower is a good example.
  • Plants with negative phototropism grow in the opposite direction of the light source.
  • Arabidopsis inflorescence is a good example.
