Answer:
I believe that everyone has two faces that they wear throughout their life. One for the world they live in where they act a certain way to be socially accepted by their peers, and one for when they’re alone and all the pressures of life are lifted. When they can truly be themselves without being judged and free to act in whatever way seems appropriate to them. I believe that someone may know a friend their whole life and think they know everything about him or her, but behind closed doors, they may hold secrets that a friend would never dream of. A person’s personal life is like a deep ocean, full of secrets that a person would never want to see daylight.
I myself have accumulated secrets throughout my life that I wouldn’t want my friends to know, not even my closest family members. Life has a way of making people feel self conscious about them selves, so they hide. The fear of people finding out and completely ruining my reputation that I’ve spent years building with my public face is hard to bear. So instead of revealing my true self, I hide my secrets away where they won’t ever become known, so life can go on as is should be in my own circle of friends.
Everyone has their own clique of friends that they get to know better then anyone else. I know because, just like everyone else, I have my own small group of best friends that I see everyday. But sometimes, I’ve noticed how a certain story can sound one way, but then gossip ensnares everyone who is affected by the story. When I’m alone with a good friend, I feel more comfortable to say something that may be regarded as boring or useless then when I’m around a larger group of people. I’ve noticed that I can say something to one person who I can trust will approve of my comment without hesitation, but if the same comment were to come up while I’m with a larger group my friends’ attitude towards it will change dramatically.
Just looking at life and all its aspects shows how people are frightened to truly express themselves as the individual they really are. Life becomes complicated in the process of growing up, and looking around, society doesn’t encourage people to stand up and be what they honestly want to be. There are those who take a chance and become successful, while others fail before they even have a chance. I believe that no matter what happens throughout life, people will hide behind their public face and be their true selves once alone at home. To take the risk of sticking out like a sore thumb and not being accepted by their peers is too great. So the only way to have a normal life is to keep their opinions to themselves.
