Invoking the cosine rule

R2=1002+802–2×100×80cos120∘

From which it is easy to show that R=140N

We have to give the direction of R . Let us find the angle, θ in relation to the force of 80N . We use the sine rule.

sin160∘R=sinθ100

θ=sin−1(100sin120∘)140

θ=38.2∘ to the 80N force
