As resultant R is given by

R = √( a^2 +b^2 +2ab cosx)

where a and b are two vectors inclined at an angle x °.

So, for maximum:

cosx = 1

so, Rmax = √(12^2+8^2+2×12×8)

= √(144+64+192)

=√400

= 20 N

For minimum;

cosx = -1

So, Rmin = √(12^2+8^2-2×12×8)

=√(144+64-192)

=√16

= 4 N
