Shayam owns the diesel version of the car,  while  Kailash owns the petrol version, Kailash's car gives an average that is 20% higher than Shayam's (in terms of  litres per kilometre). It is known that petrol costs 60% of its price higher than diesel.  If Shayam's car gives an average of 20 km per litre, then the difference in the cost of travel per kilometre  between the two cars is

Given average of Kailash car is 20% higher than Shyam’s car.

Let Kailash car take x litres of petrol / kilometre then

Shyam car will take 5/6 x litres of diesel / km.

We know that Shyam’s car gives 20 km/litre.

So for 1 km it takes 0.05 litres of diesel.

Now 5/6 x will be 0.05

So x = 0.06 litre/ km for Kailash car.

Now the difference will be 0.06 – 0.05 = 0.01

D/60 is  the difference in the cost of travel per kilometer between the two cars where D  is cost of Diesel per litre

Step-by-step explanation:

Let say Cost Of Diesel =  D Rs  Litre

Cost of Petrol  =  D + (60/100)D  = 1.6D  Rs Litre

Shayam's car gives an average of 20 km per litre

Diesel Required for  1 km  =  1/20   litre

=> Cost of 1/20  Litre diesel =  D/20  Rs

Kailash Car Average  =  20  + (20/100)20  =  24  km per litre

Petrol required for 1 km  = 1/24  litre

=> Cost of 1/25  Litre Petrol =  1.6D/24   = D/15  Rs

the difference in the cost of travel per kilometer between the two cars is

=  D/15   - D/20

= (4D - 3D)/60

= D/60

D/60 is the difference in the cost of travel per kilometre between the two cars  where D is price of Diesel per litre
