Let the speed of Tom be x km/hr and the speed of the Jerry be y km/hr.
Distance travelled by the Tom in 2 hr 30 min = 5x/2 km
Distance travelled by the Jerry in 2 hr 30 min = 5y/2 km
Distance between the Tom and Jerry = 12.5 km
Therefore, (5x - 5y)/2 = 12.5
Or, 5x - 5y = 25
Or, x - y = 5 ........... ( 1 )
Distance travelled by the Tom in 30 min = x/2 km
Distance travelled by Jerry in 30 min = y/2 km
Therefore, (x + y)/2 = 12.5
Or, x + y = 25 ........... ( 2 )
By solving these two equations, we obtain x = 15 , y = 10
Therefore, speed of Tom = 15 km/hr
And speed of Jerry = 10 km/hr
Distance travelled by the Tom in 2 hr 30 min = 5x/2 km
