When the two cubes joined, the shape is now a cuboid with a high of 7 cm, a width of 7 com and a length of 14 cm.

The lateral surface area is: $$A_L = 2 l* h +2 w * h $$

Plugging the values of the length, width and height in the formula:$$\begin{align} A_L& = 2 l* h +2 w * h \\ A_L& = 2(14 cm * 7 cm) +2 (7 cm *7 cm) \\ A_L& = 2 *98 cm^2 + 2 *49 cm^2 \\ A_L& = 196 cm^2 +98 cm^2 \\ A_L &= 294 cm^2 \end{align} $$

Total Surface area is twice the base are plus lateral surface are. $$A_T = 2 A_B+ A_L $$

The base is a rectangular of 14 cm by 7 cm, so plugging these numbers is the formula:

$$\begin{align} A_T &= 2 (14 cm * 7 cm) + 294 cm^2 \\ A_T& = 196 cm^2 +294 cm^2 \\ A_T & = 490 cm^2 \end{align} $$
