so, when connected in series: equivalent resistance= R1+R2
And when connected in parallel: equivalent resistance= 1/R1+ 1/R2
= R1+R2/R1*R2
now The ration of the resistances= R1+R2/ R1+R2/R1*R2 I.e. series resistance/ parallel resistance
=> (R1+R2)R1*R2/ R1+R2
now R1+R2 will cancel each other
therefore, equivalent resistance = R1*R2
