Given :

  • R ₁ = R ₂ = R = 10Ω

Solution :

(a)

Equivalent resistance for n number  resistors connected in series is given by the formula ,

  • Rₛ = R ₁ + R ₂... + Rₙ

Hence ,

⇒   Rₛ = R ₁ + R ₂

⇒   Rₛ = 2R

⇒  Rₛ = 20 Ω

The equivalent resistance of the combination is 20  Ω.

(b)

Equivalent  resistance for n number  resistors connected in series is given by the formula ,

  • 1 /  Rₚ = 1 / R ₁ + 1 / R ₂... + 1 / Rₙ

Hence ,

⇒  1 /  Rₚ = 1 / R ₁ + 1 / R ₂

⇒  1 /  Rₚ = 1 / R + 1 / R

⇒  1 /  Rₚ = 2 / R

⇒   Rₚ = R / 2

⇒   Rₚ = 10 / 2

⇒  Rₚ = 5 Ω

The equivalent resistance of the combination is 5  Ω.
